This old well near the kitchen door was recently restored. Perhaps this is how the residents got their water from the cistern where they collected the rain water from the roof for their needs, back in the days before city water was available in Key West.

The present city water system is piped from the mainland, 150 miles away. The pipe was installed courtesy of the military, who needed water to maintain troops here in this strategic location at the end of America, during WW II. For this reason, we enjoy city water.
